Understanding Our Approach

What Is Biblical Counseling?

A plain-language explanation of what biblical counseling is, how it works, and how it differs from secular therapy and other approaches to care.

2 Timothy 3:16–17

The Sufficiency of Scripture

Biblical counseling begins with a conviction: that the Bible is not merely a helpful resource among many — it is God's sufficient Word for the deepest needs of the human soul. This does not mean the Bible addresses every chemical formula or medical diagnosis. It means that for the questions of identity, meaning, suffering, sin, and relationship, Scripture speaks with authority, wisdom, and transforming power.

When a person sits with a biblical counselor at RHM, the goal is not symptom management or behavioral compliance. The goal is a renewed relationship with God through Christ — which produces genuine, lasting change from the inside out.

Romans 12:2

A Christ-Centered Model of Change

Biblical counseling does not believe that human beings are fundamentally broken machines in need of reprogramming. We believe that men and women are image-bearers of God (Genesis 1:27) who have been profoundly affected by sin — both the sin in us and the sin done to us.

This means that healing comes not primarily through technique or insight, but through the transforming work of the Holy Spirit applied through the Word of God, prayer, the sacraments, and the community of the church. The counselor's role is to be a companion in that journey — pointing always to Christ.

Galatians 6:1–2

Not Therapy — Ministry

It is important to understand what biblical counseling is and is not. Biblical counseling at RHM is a ministry — not a licensed clinical service. Our counselors are trained, formed, and pastorally supervised, but they are not licensed psychotherapists or psychiatrists.

This does not make the work less rigorous or less caring. It means the work is differently oriented. Where a therapist might focus on DSM diagnoses and evidence-based clinical interventions, a biblical counselor focuses on the soul, Scripture, sin, suffering, and the grace of God. We gladly collaborate with licensed clinicians and refer when clinical needs require it.

Hebrews 10:24–25

Community as Essential, Not Optional

One of the most distinctive features of biblical counseling at RHM is our insistence that healing happens in community. The local church is not a supplement to care — it is the God-designed environment in which people are known, loved, corrected, and restored.

We do not aim to produce people who are forever dependent on a counselor. We aim to connect people to a body of believers where one-another ministry can flourish. Our care pathways always include an orientation toward church involvement, small group participation, and discipleship relationships.

"For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword..."

— Hebrews 4:12
